"Suburbs can't thrive if their urban counterparts are struggling." – Harriet Tregoning

Deindustrialization, a more global economy, and a changing demographic have resulted in profound challenges for cities and metropolitan areas in the Great Lakes region over the past three or more decades. Among them are the loss of well-paying jobs in basic industry and the manufacturing sector and their attendant population loss which has created vast swaths of vacant and abandoned property, particularly in the region’s core cities. Today’s challenge is to develop, adopt, and implement transition-focused strategies and policies to create a more equitable, environmentally sustainable, and economically resilient future for the Great Lakes region.

Join us for a conversation with Harriet Tregoning, Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary in the Office of Community Planning and Development at the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, on how to build economic resilience in the Great Lakes metropolitan areas.
